Okay, so my pastor wasn’t that blunt. But that’s what I got out of it.
He talked about Moses. I LOVE the story of Moses. I love how God directly intervened to save his life as an infant. And then handed him back to his own mother to nurse and raise him until he was old enough for Pharaoh’s daughter to take him back to the palace to live. And then, you know, used him to free his people.
And that’s really all that we remember about Moses at first. God saved his life. God used him to save his people.
But he was a murderer.
Did you know that? Did you remember that? He killed an Egyptian and buried him in the sand. And then ran off into the desert to live in exile.
No longer a privileged child of the Pharaoh.
But sill a privileged child of God.
And we know this because we know God called him, while still hiding in the desert, to do mighty works for Him.
But do you know how Moses responded?
“Send someone else.” “I don’t speak well.” “They won’t believe me.”
Basically, Moses was telling God, “I don’t believe you.”
Moses was anything but a “Super-Christian”; he was anything but perfect.
And yet, God still used him. He even “gave in” and used Moses’ brother, Aaron, to do the public speaking for him.
And that’s not the only time God has used imperfect people to do miraculous work.
In fact, I’m having a hard time coming up with people God has used that were perfect.
(You know, besides Christ – because, well, Christ was God.)
The moral of the story is this: God won’t pat you on the shoulder and say, “There, there. You do speak well. I’m glad that you’ve killed a man.”
However, He prefers working through the broken people; it’s the best way to let His own glory shine through.
So I’m not perfect. God will not excuse what I’ve done. He’ll forgive it, but not excuse it. And He will work through it in ways I could never have orchestrated. Because, well, I’m too broken to see past my own inadequacies.
And, you know what else? God uses the broken people that annoy me. He uses the people that hurt me.
Because Christians aren’t perfect. And I need to get over that.
