About a month ago, I was able to get Apple Cinnamon Cheerios for $0.50/box. The whole family was understandably excited.
See, being the Natural Mommy, I try my darnedest to get the family to eat such healthy breakfast foods as granola, oatmeal, and shredded wheat.
My husband tends to prefer Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
So, in order to stretch this sweet deal, and also to compromise with the Natural Mommy’s Breakfast Philosophy, I filled half of a storage container with plain, generic Cheerios, and then topped it off with Apple Cinnamon Cheerios.
And then I shook that thing like it was going out of style.
(Can I use that analogy there?)
(Maybe if I was reffering to the shaking as going out of style, as opposed to the container of mixed Cheerios.)
The result? A healthier version of a sweet breakfast food. AND, those $0.50 boxes of Apple Cinnamon Cheerios will last twice as long.

That’s my frugal tip of the week. What’s yours? See Biblical Womanhood for more!
Great idea. I’ve thought of mixing cereals for the kids…they like the sugary stuff and we like the healthy stuff (well we like the sugary stuff too – but don’t eat too much of it).
I think that would be a good process for weaning the kids off the sugar stuff…
I do the same thing! I thought I was the only one. I always do half and half with honey nut cheerios and plain. I also make my own “honey bunches of oats” with homemade oatmeal mixed with generic wheaties.
My parents always did that when we were growing up! We would get a small box of frosted flakes – the Peruvian knock-off was a LOT more sugar than the American brand! We would mix that with a big box of plain corn flakes. It worked well because corn flakes were much cheaper, and it was a healthier meal. Mmm… thanks for sharing. 🙂 My current cereal of choice is Raisin Bran.
My husband prefers Cinnamon Toast Crunch & Cocoa Puffs too… our Kroger has a deal going right now where you buy 3 General Mills cereals and get 2 gallons of milk free. I did it last night with coupons and came out pretty well. And am set for milk for a while!
What a fabulous idea!! I think I’ll try that next time I get a sweeter-than-mommy-prefers cereal deal! My family will be thrilled!!
Great tip – thanks!
That is a terrific idea! I am going to keep that in mind next time there’s a great deal in the cereal aisle!
Hey Natural Mommy. I was looking around the internet and found something interesting. I’m super opposed to feeding kids processed and prepackaged foods. I think it inhibits their systems and leads to ADD, etc, related problems. (Look at what’s in those lunchables!!!).
Anyways I was looking into “bento boxes” for kids, which are really cool. I thought you’d like them. http://lunchinabox.net/
Thought you’d find it interesting. 🙂
What a fabulous idea!! My husband is the one in our house who happily eats oatmeal and cream of wheat. I’m the one that needs a bit more sugar, so I’m going to try this!
