Here’s a tip I learned just today:
Melt 7/8 tablespoon butter, cool a minute, then add to 7/8 cup milk. Mix well, and you’ve got yourself a full cup of half and half!
I’ve got a recipe that calls for one cup half and half. The smallest container I can find at the store holds two cups. I don’t make this recipe often and all, and I don’t have any other recipe that calls for half and half (and we don’t drink coffee). Normally, that second cup just goes bad in our fridge. This way, I can make it a cup at a time!
Not to mention it’s a lot cheaper, this way, too!
What do you substitute when you’re cooking to save money?
I really don’t sub this but if I run out of brown sugar I use sugar and molasse. I do use powder milk for alot of baking.
How much is 7/8 cup? I don’t like keeping 1/2 & 1/2 either so I like this idea if I need it.
This is great! Thanks! I don’t ever buy half&half unless I find it considerably marked down and have always just by-passed recipes calling for it… this is great information!
cool idea! love it!
I was just needing a recipe for half & half today… a very timely post! Thank you!
