It’s my motivation during the day.
Because sometimes I need some motivational music to get me off my duff and get stuff done.
Pandora.com is, and I hesitate to say this, because it’s quite the understatement, an online radio, of sorts. Since 2000, it’s been hard at work on what it calls the “Music Genome Project,” which they describes as “the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken.”
From their site:
Together our team of fifty musician-analysts has been listening to music, one song at a time, studying and collecting literally hundreds of musical details on every song. It takes 20-30 minutes per song to capture all of the little details that give each recording its magical sound – melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics … and more – close to 400 attributes!
Why, you ask, does such an overdone analysis of music strike The Natural Mommy as cause for its own blog post?
Because of this Music Genome Project, Pandora.com learns what music you prefer. You type in which artist you are in the mood for (try Third Day… good stuff) and they will line up every artist they have on their database whose attributes are similar.
And if they play something you don’t like, simply click the Thumbs Down button. When you hear a song you love, click Thumbs Up. When you hear a song for the umpteenth time, click “I’m tired of this song – don’t play it for a month.”
And you can create your own stations based on a particular artist. Our two favorite stations around the house these days are Jack Johnson and Third Day.
Easy. Free. Gets the dishes done. If you haven’t heard it yet, go check it out.

The Natural Mommy was given nothing in exchange for this rave review. Nothing but good music, that is. She just wanted to share with you because she loves you.
Awwwww.
Wow, this sounds wonderful.
We have no Christian music here and I am always looking for something to listen. We brought many CD’s with me, but sometimes you just want to hear something else. I am eager to check this out.
Thanks for the tip!
Sounds pretty cool, I’m definitely checking it out. I don’t get anything done unless I have some groovy music on! Somehow even scrubbing toilets isn’t half bad when you can dance and sing at the same time!
I use Pandora all the time too!!
Love it! Thanks! I like being able to hear whole songs before buying them on itunes.
We listen to Pandora, too, and we love it! 🙂 We aren’t able to get many radio stations where we live, so this is great.
Blessings,
Michele 🙂

Hello Natural Mommy and others — thanks for listening to Pandora! We’re glad you’re enjoying it. 🙂
Agreed that sometimes music is the one thing that keeps us all motivated!

OK, I know I already commented on this, but now that I’ve signed up and spent most the day listening to music and building channels, all I gotta say is
THANK YOU!
This is so much fun. I am totally rockin out to Tiffany’s “I think we’re alone now” and reminiscing about being 13 again!
Now I just have to figure out how to listen to it throughout the house. All I have is a PC (kind of hard to carry around with me) I tried to pull it up on our playstation but it keeps saying something about memory, yadda, yadda. Hopefully my hubby can figure it out later so I can actually hear it upstairs.
Thanks again for the tip!
OK, I’m officially addicted to pandora now. I may have to mention this on my blog too, but I will trackback to your post!
And Donielle, I had completely forgotten about Tiffany until your comment, that was the first cassette tape I ever bought – it was third grade and it took an awful lot of weeks of allowance to get it! 🙂
HI,
I see that you use and love Pandora and I wanted mention Slacker Internet radio to you. Slacker is similar to Pandora, free, but with a lot more control and features.
Slacker will play you songs that it thinks you’ll like based on one artist of your choosing, just like Pandora, or based on as many artists as you like. You can group together any variation of artists and have Slacker play only music from them, or music from those bands and bands like them. This is great for hearing only your favorite music or for learning about new artists that are similar to the ones you already like. You can even ad your own image to your perfect custom station and email it to friends.
Best of all Slacker has over 100 different pre-programmed genre stations that are created and updated constantly by professional DJs instead of a computer program. There are even pre-programmed children’s stations, which can take some of the work out of entertaining kids on-the-go.
Check it out, its pretty cool:
