On the heels of my last post (I debated the singular form of ‘heel’, but decided ultimately that my last post had two heels, as I do), comes an article claiming natural food masks to be “useless, unproven or harmful.”
Since I received some comments suggesting a couple of the “debunked” food remedies (honey, olive oil), I thought this article would be of interest to you.
Of course, there is the consideration that the article is addressing wrinkles, and I was assuming the comments were more for the area of clear, clean, moisturized complexions.
But also note the remedies they do suggest. Microdermabrasion is one, and it actually wounds the skin. Killing the nerve cells in your face is not yet (yet!) approved by the FDA, but Botox is. It only “relaxes” the muscles by blocking communication with the nerves.
Interesting.

I took an introductory microbiology class a couple semesters ago as part of my undergrad, and I still remember the professor pointing out that Clostridium botulinum is the most toxic bacteria known to man and the only one licensed by the FDA. Botox gives you botulism. It’s flaccid paralysis mechanism is very similar to the rigid paralysis of tetanus, its close relative.
I don’t care if it ineffective; I highly doubt Botox is better for me than olive oil!
Honestly, I’m not sure how olive oil would either, since it’s really just a moisturizer, so it wouldn’t prevent wrinkles any more than any other moisturizer I’d imagine.
I did find it interesting that there was absolutely no studies or even actual doctor quotes pertaining to the natural things, no reason to believe them other than “doctors” said so. This article almost read as an advertisement to me. The closest they got to mentioning science was the thing that they recommended which apparently needed more research (but they were recommending it anyways). Debunked? hardly. 😛
I totally use olive oil! 🙂 At least when I’m in the kitchen. I don’t go running out of the shower and slather myself in it. (not that I haven’t thought about it)I don’t think my husband would be into being with someone who smelled like a salad or grilled foods! But when I’m cooking with it or have my hands in it I rub it in my hands like lotion before lighting rinsing off and drying. It actually works pretty good on my dry hands!
