I’ve heard most of the ones concerning pregnancy, I’m pretty sure. One of the first ones I heard was when I was pregnant with Olivia and was told I was *definitely* carrying a boy because of how low my belly was.
Since then, I don’t put much stock in them.
(Turns out I carry low. No maternity shirt can contain this.)
I heard one the other day, though, that got me thinking.
According to legend, if you are pregnant with a girl, you suffer a very unattractive pregnancy. Limp, lifeless hair; thin, brittle nails; blotchy, acne-ridden face; etc. Because, you see, your little princess is sucking all the beauty out of you.
I don’t remember the state of my hair and nails while pregnant with Olivia. I did swell an *enormous* amount, but I think that was more due to my ridiculously poor diet (which consisted mainly of corndogs and frozen pizza). I thought I looked pretty durn good while pregnant with Benjamin. But with this one, my nails can’t grow out to save my life. My face in the mirror and photographs looks like a stranger’s (and not a hot stranger’s). The color and shape is just off.
So I thought I’d throw the question out there:
Are you ugly when pregnant with girls? Gorgeous with boys?
What Old Wives’ Tales do you get suckered into believing?
Hmm… I only have a boy. When I was pregnant with him, not much changed. Most people didn’t even realize I was pregnant until a few weeks before he showed up. My hair was extra thick and grew lie crazy. I didn’t break out despite never removing my makeup. My face never got fat and my feet never swelled.
This time I am 8 weeks. I’ve been breaking out since before I found out I was pregnant. I already feel like a cow. My nails have been going like crazy but my hair seems to be in worse shape.
It’s something to think about! I can’t wait to see if yours is a girl or boy!
I am carrying a girl, and I have never felt prettier. Do you remember how acne-ridden my face was? Suddenly – gone! I haven’t had to wash my face since December! My hair and nails don’t seem any different. (Though, my hair does seem straighter than it has been – *sniff*. I have very few curly-hair days.) I haven’t swollen at all, but that’s probably because I’m only 5 months along. I’ll let you know how the rest of the pregnancy goes. 🙂
hmm. I only have two girls. I felt like a cow with both of them.I was worse with Lexi but like you with O, I had a horrible diet. I broke out with both of them, but I’ve always been acne prone (just look at me when I get my regular monthly visitor…) however it did move down onto my chest when I was preggo. my nails grew like crazy with both of them, and as for hair? I don’t remember.
As for you, I think you were absolutely beautiful with B. not that you’re not every day, but as far as being preggo goes. I haven’t seen enough pics of you this time, but I do think you’re having a girl. I have from day one. he he.
I had three girls with my ex husband and had a super duper rough time through all of them. Horrible ‘morning sickness’, my hair never looked clean, my skin would alternate from dry to greasy and I always had pimples, I had ridiculous heartburn and (though I think this is totally unrelated) pre-term labor and bed rest.
The pregnancy with my son was completely and totally different. I had no ‘morning sickness’, no weird hair thing, not one pimple or dry skin outbreak, no early hospital visits, no medication, no bed rest. I actually had a hard time believing I was pregnant at times…I had tons of energy and enjoyed it so much more. Weird?
I don’t beleive that one for an instant.
With Sasha (a boy) I had HORRIBLE, painful edema. I mean, really, really bad. And I was on a special diet that was very low sodium.
He was just sitting on my kidneys so they weren’t working even at the sub-par level they do normally.
My hair was greasy, and flat, too and I don’t see how I can blame his postion on that.
I do beleive in the cravings theory. Savory= boy, sweet=girl.
I was told by my mother and grandmother that you must never tickle a baby. It will cause them to stutter, be short, or just plain overwhelm their system. Well, I became concerned when I had my second because my oldest kept wanting to tickle his baby brother, so I asked my pediatrician. He listened somberly, chuckled softly and said he had never heard of any correlation between tickling and stuttering. However, he said, be sure you don’t over do it. You can overstimulate a baby and overwhelm them quickly if you do it too much. I saw this actually happen in a little baby girl and knew he was right, but as for being short due to a older brother who loved to hear his baby laugh, I think we’re safe.
I looked pretty good pregnant, I must say :). My hair was shiny and thicker! I didn’t lose hairs when I shampooed or brushed, but now I’m losing them all. Ickk.
My nails were strong and grew quickly. My skin had never been better.
It rocked.
The only time I was pregnant there was one of each in there.
But I didn’t feel pretty. I felt HUGE.
I’m 31 weeks and on a forum for pregnant women due in June 2009 and lemme tell ya there are a LOT of… um… not very intelligent women/girls out there. Some of the questions they ask are downright horrifying!!
I am pg with a girl, and also have a girl. Both pregnancies are so unbelievably different!! And I had an amnio so yes I KNOW it’s a girl. I am really interested to see how different she will be from her sister because MAN this is a tough pregnancy. We’ll see…
It seems like those old wives tales are never true…just a stroke of luck if they are!
I hadn’t heard that about the girl taking all of your beauty during pregnancy…that’s kind of cute, though!
I have heard just about every old wive tale there is.
I’ll list a few that you guys haven’t mentioned:
•If you have gained a lot of weight means boy.
•If your urine is bright yellow boy.
•Alot of headaches indicates a boy.
•If your nose has been spreading it indicates a boy.
•If your feet are colder then what they were before pregnancy your having a boy.
•Crave orange juice girl.
•Weight in the face indicates girl.
•If your chest measurement has increased dramatically you should expect a girl.
•Craving chocolate girl.
•Internal physiology % confirms that-“Women tend to carress the womb 87% more when the child is female”
•If your left breast is bigger than the right during pregnancy, you’re having a GIRL. If the right is bigger, it’ll be a BOY.
Those are just a few.
Im currently 8wks Pregnant..dying to know what im having but based on the old wive tales im stuck in the middle.
One i would like to know but..which sex are you said to have when your nails are growing faster & stronger?
