So, I think I’ve mentioned before that bumGenius is my favorite cloth diapering brand.
EXCEPT FOR THE BLASTED VELCRO. (Sorry, “hook and loop”)
It just doesn’t last. But bumGenius is the brand the fits our babies best and leaks the least.
(When the velcro stays fastened.)
I have one of their organic all-in-one snap diapers. I like it! But it’s $25. And it’s organic cotton, so when I line-dry (which I do, now that I’m all frugal again), it’s stiff as a board.
So I’ve just been sitting. And waiting. Wondering when bumGenius would answer the cry of the masses for SNAPS, PLEASE!
And they have! Looky here!
It’s called flip. How cute!
In 140 characters or less, it’s a one-size snap bumGenius cover with a stay dry microfiber insert, not stuffed inside, but laid down the middle.
In case you didn’t know, you’re not supposed to put a microfiber insert directly against a baby’s skin. It’ll suck the moisture right out, drying the poor baby’s skin. So what the manufacturers of bumGenius have done here is attach a stay-dry suede (I’m guessing either similar to or exactly the same as the inside of a bumGenius pocket diaper) that will wick wetness away from baby’s skin and protect it from the three absorbent layers of microfiber on the other side of the insert.
Ready for the parts I LOVE?!
1. SNAPS. SNAPS. SNAPS! These diapers should last long enough to diaper at LEAST two children, right?
2. The covers are reusable! This will save you money! The individual package (which includes a cover and an insert) are $16.95 (cheaper than the bumGenius 3.0 one-size pocket diaper). You only need, at most, five covers. Additional inserts are $4.95. You’ll need a total of (for a newborn) 22 inserts (guessing 8-10 diapers per day, adding two additional inserts for night-time doubling). The five packages come to 84.75; the 17 extra inserts come to 84.15. That’s a complete diapering package, birth through potty-training, for $168.90! HALF the price of a complete pocket diapering package! And that doesn’t even include the savings most sites will give when you buy in bulk like that!
3. Less laundry! Really, this only effects the line-dryers out there, but you’ll have extra space on your clothes line for your princess’s many daily outfits with only five covers hanging up!
4. Versatility! Not only do they offer the stay-dry insert for $4.95, but also an organic cotton one for $7.95 and a pack of 18 disposable inserts for $4.95. It’s been awhile since I’ve bought disposable diapers… this may be equivalent, correct me if I’m wrong. They’ve also achieved the Oeko-Tex certification, having passed their tests for harmful substances. Has Pampers?
Why would you even want disposable inserts? Well, having just spend three nights in a hotel over labor day weekend, I can attest to a time when it’s handy to throw away baby’s BM’s. IF ya know what I mean.
Now for the part I don’t love, but have decided I can live with:
Line dry the covers.
Separating covers from inserts as you toss diapers into the dryer isn’t the most convenient, but it will help the covers last a lot longer. AND, you’ll only have five covers! And with the cute, bright colors they come in, it won’t be hard finding them in your washer.
Oh, and they’ll line dry as fast as your inserts dry in the dryer. I’ll almost guarantee it.
(Having never actually tested this product, I can’t really guarantee anything I’ve said in this article.)
(PLEASE, COTTONBABIES, CAN I TEST ONE OR TWELVE? PLEASE?)
I saw these and their other new brand out, and I thought, “NEAT!” and then I remembered that we have plenty of diapers that work just fine that I already paid for. Oh well.
So whenever I get around to having another behbeh, I might pick up some of these new kinds to try.
kbye!
Oh, be still my soul.
Those look awesome!! I just finished fixing all my hook and loop! Now I’m moving on to fix all my elastic on BG and FB’s. Almost done and not a day too soon with my crazy, crawling, climbing 8mos old!!
OH. MY. GOODNESS.
If I weren’t in a serious need to be frugal right now, I’d TOTALLY go snatch up these diapers RIGHT NOW. This is the best innovation I’ve seen since I started cloth diapering. Exciting! Thrilling! Pocket-book friendly!!!
I’m so in love with these. Thank you for sharing!!
I hate new diapers. Suddenly I am no longer content with the millions i have already. boo.
Oh, thanks for pointing these out! I also hate velcro and these look great. I think I’ll have to try one 🙂
Any thoughts on the Econobum? Thanks!
Oooh exciting! I just found out that Kelly’s Closet is discontinuing Baby Kangas, and I had only bought 12 for Savannah. I don’t have the money to buy more now, but when I do get the money I’ll definitely look into these. 🙂
Okay, I read this post when it was first put up and I can’t get these diapers off my mind. I’m addicted to disposable diapers, yet the way you talk about these makes it sound so much more affordable than disposables. Not to mention, fun. Can it really be that easy?
I’m really considering switching to cloth diapers now that I’ve seen this system. Can you really get away with only 5 covers? Even with a newborn? Is the suggestion above (5 covers, 22 liners) a bare minimum or should I have extras so I don’t have to do laundry all the time?
I have the BG 3.0s and apparently, they now say in the wash instructions to not dry the covers in the dryer! My velcro is getting less and less sticky, and according to Bum Genius, it’s because of drying the diapers in the dryer. Because my instructions say that it’s okay to dry them in the dryer, they will be covered under warranty since it’s been less than a year. SO, all of that to say, these new diapers don’t have a “con” compared to BGs because of this new instruction. I wonder if they’d let me trade my 3.0s for these new diapers??
I bought a FLIP day pack and really do love it. The only time it isn’t as great is when the baby poos, because it often gets on the cover and you have to use a new cover. The FLIP daypack comes with two covers and six inserts. So, you get between two and six diaper changes, depending on if the baby poos or not. I also have BumGenius diapers, which I love. Have been using them for over 8 months now…no probs with the tabs yet, but I also always line dry them.
Hah! Ok someone linked to this post, and I came and read it, and saw that I was the first commenter.
We have 3 Flip covers and some organic cotton inserts, and the stay-dry ones. Oh, and diposable ones, too.
Love the Flip.
.-= Kacie´s last blog ..It’s not how much $ you make, it’s what you do with it =-.
Kacie, we have them too, now! We desperately needed new diapers for Levi (his were all Benjamin’s old ones and the velcro just did NOT hold!). So for Christmas, we asked for Flips dipes for him and that’s what we’ve been using every since! I really need to write a post about them now that I’ve actually used them. They are my favorites, but there’s always a downside, right? (Washing poopy covers in the sink being one of them…)
