There. We made a decision. For the first time since we moved here almost four years ago, we know for sure what we’re doing.
It’s been a very un-sure past four years. Filled with potential job offers that never finalized and real job offers that fizzled out at the last minute. I’ve searched for houses in Alabama, Boston, Indiana, and San Diego. We’ve never been able to answer the “So when will Josh be done with school?” question. Before now.
Two years. He’ll be done in two years.
And what’s more? We can even answer the “So what comes after that?” question.
We’re moving to San Diego. In two years.
Yes, something extreme could happen. The San Diego job is a government one, so they could potentially move him to any of their facilities anywhere in the country instead of to San Diego if the need arises. But that risk is a rare one.
Also, San Diego hasn’t told Josh what they want him to research for the next two years. It could be something that doesn’t mesh at all with Josh’s prior research which would result in the two year deadline becoming impossible.
But again, odds are that won’t happen.
So we’re staying. Probably in the same duplex. For another two years. We’ve never been that stable before. We’ll see if we can handle it.
Oh, and I believe I mentioned the small concern that we didn’t know how we’d make it through the summer financially. Since Josh’s TA money will end halfway through May and his new scholarship won’t start until August.
Mere days after giving that over to God, we did our taxes. And the amount we’re getting back will be quiet sufficient for three months living expenses. Praise God!
Yay for decisions! For stability! For having plans! I know this was a big decision, and I don’t question it was the right one. I’m excited for this opportunity for Josh!

I’m sure making that decision has taken a huge weight off your shoulders – and wow! Getting the tax refund that will get you through summer – that is just amazing!! Good luck with it all! =)

YAY! Sounds great! And YAY for the tax refund!
Well, I always kind of selfishly hoped you would wind up back at Taylor. And maybe you will, after the Ph.D. and some experience in San Diego. Who would want to live there in that climate all the time? 🙂 Much better to have blizzards, high humidity, and tornados!
Best wishes for the Zapf’s. We miss you all.
Bob and Ellen
Personally, I’d be okay with that, too! Especially if Taylor continues their policy of free tuition for employee’s children! 😀
I think it is the right decision. I’m glad you’ll be in Indiana for two more years, and I think the trip to HI proved that I will be able to make it to San Diego. Perhaps on my way to Sydney. Then to Nashville. Then to …. ? My kids better make a lot of money, because I think I will need them to help me pay for these trips!!!!
What a relief that you finally have a decision and an end date. Good luck with everything, it sounds like you picked the best option.

So glad the decision has been made. I have been praying for you all. I know this is a huge relief to you.
