When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, I did a little research. Some of that research was to see what the probability was of myself also getting the disease later in life. Three things I learned surprised me, but also comforted me.
- You can reduce your risk of breast cancer by breastfeeding, no matter how old you are when you give birth.
- You can further reduce your risk of breast cancer by giving birth to, and breastfeeding, your first child before the age of 25.
- If you’ve had your first child before the age of 25, you can reduce your risk further yet by having at least four children and breastfeeding them all.
So far, I can check off two of the three, with plans to eventually have a fourth baby.
And, if you’re wondering, my mother was not able to breastfeed (The support back then was terrible! The doctor told her to stop!), was in her 30’s when she had her first child, and had three children.

What interesting info to have! I can only check #1 off my list… I was 28 when my first child was born. 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing this… you’re right in that it can be a comfort to many. And thanks for linking up to “Three Things You Should Know” Thursday!
Good to know! I’ve got #1 and #2 and I’m hoping for #3 as well.
Uh oh! I can only claim #1. I was 26 when Savannah was born. Shoot! If I hadn’t had that miscarriage!!! 😉
Thanks, that was comforting. I’ve got all three–well, baby #4 is on it’s way!
Thought you might find this interesting since breast cancer runs in our family. Mom
